Spiritual Survival Essentials – Part 4 (Community in Christ)

Building a faith community is vital for every believer’s spiritual growth and well-being. Just as God created us for relationship with Him, He also designed us to thrive in community with one another. Throughout the Bible, we see the importance of gathering together, supporting one another, and sharing life’s joys and sorrows. We are called to be part of a community that encourages us in our faith, challenges us to grow, and provides a network of love and support.

Navigating the Wilderness of Faith

Just like survival in the wilderness, there’s strength in numbers. Your faith community should be your ultimate support squad. They’re there to cheer you on, keep you accountable, and make help you feel a sense of belonging. You might not like growing pains just as some people don’t enjoy exercising, but as Proverbs 27:17 says, ‘iron sharpens iron’, making us more loving and Christ-like.

Understand our limitations

In today’s hustle culture, which often glorifies relentless ambition and pushing beyond limits, embracing boundaries may seem counterintuitive. However, just as God set boundaries for the sea (Job 38:8-11), he also establishes limits in our lives for our own good. These boundaries shape our stories and opportunities, making each of us unique. Just as Job faced limitations and trials, we too encounter challenges that help us grow and learn within our given boundaries.

You can’t be besties with everyone. Jesus had a small group of very close friends like Lazarus and his sisters, and different levels of friendship with others.  when forming relationships, quality should come before quantity – but as always, there is a healthy balance.

A Unique Unity

Jesus exemplified how a family should act, defining it as those who have the same heart and work towards the same goal. According to the Bible, a Christian community serves to share life together, whether it is praying for one another or meeting practical needs.

Here are some ways you can form or maintain a vibrant faith community:

  • Small Group Gatherings / Fellowship Groups
  • Service Projects
  • Hospitality Ministry
  • Social Events
  • Prayer Meets
  • Ministry Teams
  • Mentorship Programs
  • Discipleship Classes
  • Communication Channels
  • Encouragement and Accountability Groups

While it is healthy to have a regular space for you to discuss and learn about God as a group, be open to more informal activities such as sharing a meal we’re going bowling as these spaces often help to strengthen deeper friendships.

Serving Others Like Christ

Let’s roll up our sleeves and start serving others like Jesus did. Remember when He washed His disciples’ feet? That’s the kind of humility and love we’re aiming for. Whether it’s practical acts of service or offering a listening ear, we’re called to be like Jesus while utilizing our unique experiences and gifts. Just as Jesus never forced people to listen or accept him, we should be mindful not to force our help or advice on others, but instead, offer our support willingly and compassionately.

Practical Serving: Think about the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37). He didn’t just walk past the guy in need—he stopped, helped him out, and went above and beyond to care for him. That’s the kind of heart we want to have when it comes to serving others, not expecting anything  In return for helping others.

Emotional Support: Jesus was the ultimate comforter. When His friend Lazarus died, He wept with those who were grieving (John 11:35) even though he was about to raise him back to life! Sometimes, the best way to serve others is simply by being there for them, offering a shoulder to cry on or a listening ear.

Conclusion

God created us to connect with him and each other in unique ways. While being cautious not to be overly reliant on others, having a desire for relationships is healthy – God is all about relationships. Together, we can strengthen our faith, serve others, and make a positive impact in the world around us.
