In the Age of Science, Technology, and Others: How much credit should I give to God?

If someone decided to help you, saying “Thank God!” could be a very dismissive response, and I don’t think Jesus would act this way. In fact, Jesus demonstrates this by his continual acknowledgment of people in tandem with thanking the Lord and giving him due credit.

If we can recognize a bad friend as someone who only reaches out when they need something, we should avoid doing the same with God.

Don’t forget to thank him for all of the good things in your life. This is very healthy for your emotional wellbeing too!

Another bad tendency people seem to have is treating God like a genie. His goal is to provide what is good for us long-term, not what will make us happy in the moment.

I find the healthiest balance in perspective is to keep God in the forefront of our minds and our best to see things from his point of view. For instance, if a friend helps me out in a big way, I might say “You’re such a blessing from the Lord. I’m very grateful for your help.”

With those statements, I am acknowledging their willingness and ability to help while recognizing that God is the one who provided them to help me.

What about science and technology?

Wisdom comes from the Lord. He provides us with tools and inspiration for improving our lives. Regardless of where it seems to come from, he the sole source of science discoveries or available technologies, and I’m grateful to the people who have dedicated their time and efforts into bringing those tools into fruition. Oftentimes, God likes to work with and through people to demonstrate his love.

Ask the Lord for wisdom as you consider incorporating new technologies into your life: if it would be good for you. If it turns out to be, thank him for providing that help. Your decision should always be based wisdom from the Bible and discernment for your situation. Do your due diligence to research and weigh your options, costs, and who it will impact. After you’ve done your part, trust God with what you cannot control and be encouraged that he does all things for the good of his people. (Romans 8:28)

How often do you thank God? Do you focus more on the troubles in life or the blessings you have?

God shows us mercy and grace everyday. From general things like giving us life to more specific things like giving us a relaxing day at work. It’s not only right for us to continually thank and praise God for who he is and what he has done for us, but it changes our mind –  it changes our attitude and ultimately our health as well, but that’s more of a bonus benefit.

No matter your life circumstance, there is always something to be thankful for. The more time you spend counting your blessings and remembering your creator, the closer you will become to experiencing godly joy.

Jesus was in constant conversation with God, and an outpouring of that relationship was continual thankfulness. I encourage you to focus your mind on God throughout the day, remembering who he is in relation to your life and circumstances. This should naturally lead you to let go of the worries and stress that comes from the world.

While I’m advocating for an optimistic viewpoint, I want to clarify that suffering and pain is no joke – don’t ignore it, but seek God in the midst of whatever hurts you are experiencing.

Here’s a simple phrase to focus on for the week: Don’t be a complainer, be a praiser!
