Spiritual Survival Essentials – Part 1

We eat, sleep, breath, and exercise in order to stay physically healthy. When we don’t take care of our bodies, it can have a negative impact on our mood and our relationships. Though focusing on your physical wellbeing has some benefit, spiritual health is even more important and has a lasting impact. (1 Timothy 4:8)

In this series, I’ll cover some practical steps you can take to maintain a spiritually healthy life, being prepared for emergency situations, and how to cope in difficult seasons.

The Impacts on Health

Though we can’t see spiritual things with the naked eye, they need to be fed and properly maintained just like our bodies. In fact, where we stand with God and others has an immense impact on our emotional and mental health which in turn affects our physical being.

Your Basic Toolkit

There are many ways of maintaining our spiritual health, but I will only be focusing on these three essentials:

  1. Prayer
  2. God’s word
  3. Fellowship and Serving

Exploring Your Uniqueness

There are activities that one person might enjoy while another totally does not. This is all part of God’s unique design in each of us. Why shouldn’t our relationship with God be unique as well?

Here are some biblical examples that God may have called you to enjoy fellowship with him:

  • Music and dancing (2 Samuel 6:14–22)
  • Being in nature (Mark 6:46)
  • Service (John 13:34-35)

Whether it’s through nature or acts of service, each of us has a unique way to connect with and experience God. If you’re interested in exploring this topic more, I recommend ‘Sacred Pathways’ by Gary L. Thomas.

Conclusion

Now that we’ve laid down some of the groundwork on spiritual health and freedom in our journey, next time, we’ll dive deeper into the spiritual survival toolkit of prayer, God’s word, and lastly, fellowship and serving. In the meantime, what unique ways do you connect with God? Are there biblical figures that you relate to?
