Topless Attempts
I recently came across a campaign in Boston called ‘Free the Nipple’ or ‘topfreedom.’ Here’s some context about the movement:
“Massachusetts law prohibits women from being completely shirtless in public unless they are breastfeeding. Men, however, can go shirtless without issue.”
The topfreedom movement wants to change that by pushing for equal rights to bare chests, regardless of gender, but does this really help the issue?
While I appreciate the intention to address gender equality, I believe this approach is misguided. As a woman, I don’t see how this helps anyone. If anything, it might lead to more men struggling with lust and make women feel even more uncomfortable with the inevitable stares. And honestly, I’m glad men still have to keep their pants on!
The Fight Over Equality and Value
True equality doesn’t mean treating everyone the same. It’s about acknowledging that each person has the same inherent value. Just as we interact differently with close friends versus casual acquaintances, each relationship requires a unique approach.
People love to argue that men and women are essentially the same. But let’s be real, even a child can tell there’s a difference. And that’s something to appreciate!
It is a good thing to be different. When we embrace the strengths and roles that come with those differences, we add to the richness of our world. That diversity glorifies our creator and unites us, while reminding us of the value we share. Our worth is rooted in the dignity we carry as humans, not in what we show or cover.
The Issue
The real issue stems from the frustration of unfair treatment of women in the workplace, public sphere, and even within their own communities.
Women often feel resentment when men are promoted over them when they have equal or greater qualifications. Conversely, men may envy the preferential treatment women sometimes receive from strangers.
These tensions over who gets better treatment never ends.
These ongoing tensions between men and women reflect a deeper misunderstanding of what true equality is meant to be. Our focus should not be on sameness, but on recognizing the inherent value in our God-given uniqueness.

In the end, movements like “topfreedom” seem to miss the mark on what true equality should look like. It’s not about leveling the playing field by erasing the distinctions between men and women; it’s about valuing those differences and treating one another with dignity and respect. Forcing sameness doesn’t get us closer to equality, it just overlooks the beauty in our diversity.
